Ticket Rush Expected After Swimming Success
Tickets to women's swimming at the 2001 Goodwill
Games are expected to soar after outstanding performances
by Australia's sports heroes at the World Championships in
Japan last night.
2001 Goodwill Games Chief Executive Campbell
Rose today congratulated Petria Thomas and Leisel Jones on
their remarkable efforts at Fukuoka.
Petria Thomas snatched the international title
in the 200m butterfly and obtained her personal best time
of 2min 0.673 sec.
Fifteen-year-old Leisel Jones came second in
the 100m breastroke final, only .78sec behind China's Xuejuan
Luo.
Mr Rose said both the men's and women's teams
had proven that Australia had one of the strongest swimming
contingents in the world.
"We are very proud of the Australian swimmers
at the World Championships and we can't wait for them to come
back and compete at the Goodwill Games," he said.
"The 2001 Goodwill Games will be a special
event for the Australian public to welcome home our swimming
heroes and cheer them on in our own backyard."
Mr Rose said around 65 per cent of tickets to
swimming sessions from August 29 to September 3 were booked
out, including all four men's sessions, but there were plenty
of seats still available to women's swimming.
"In this unique round robin format, spectators
will be sure to see all our swimming legends as they turn
out each day to compete against other teams and accrue points
leading up to the finals," he said.
Tickets are still on offer for women's swimming
on August 29 and 30, and September 1 and 3. To book tickets,
contact Ticketek on 133-877.
