Attention News Eds:
Volunteers available for interview according to sporting venue/suburb
Around 3500 volunteers will be collecting their
2001 Goodwill Games uniforms and undergoing intensive training
from this week, in preparation for the start of competition
on August 29.
Members of the 3500-strong volunteer team are
coming from as far away as Tasmania, Western Australia and
the Northern Territory to help deliver the 2001 Goodwill Games
and showcase Brisbane to the rest of the world.
Consisting of around 1500 sport personnel and
over 2000 people off the field of play, the volunteers will
be working in all areas of the Games from catering and cleaning,
to assisting with medal ceremonies and the media.
2001 Goodwill Games Chief Executive Campbell
Rose said venue training would kick off from this weekend,
with more than 500 volunteers heading to The Sleeman Centre
at Chandler on Saturday.
"Other volunteers will be undergoing training
at their assigned venues over the next few weeks," he
said.
"The training program will ensure volunteers
are familiar with every facet of the venue before Games time."
Mr Rose said volunteers had also been allocated
times to collect their official Goodwill Games uniforms and
accreditation at the Theiss Building at South Brisbane.
"With their accreditation in hand, volunteers
will be able to enjoy free public transport when attending
training sessions," he said.
The training sessions for volunteers at each
sporting venue are as follows: The Sleeman Centre, August
11; ANZ Stadium and Brisbane Entertainment Centre, August
18; Kurrawa Beach, August 25; Brisbane Convention and Exhibition
Centre and South Bank, August 26.
