Australian Goodwill Swimming Team Announced
AUSTRALIA and the United States can settle all
bets on who is the best when they compete in the unique dual
team format of the 2001 Goodwill Games swimming competition
later this month.
2001 Goodwill Games organisers today welcomed
the announcement by Australian Swimming of 45 of Australia's
top men and women swimmers (23 men and 22 women) confirmed
to compete in Brisbane from August 29 to September 3.
The Australian team will be up against the best
swimmers from Team USA, European Allstars and the World Allstars
when they compete in a round-robin format for a total prize
purse of $508,000 (USD).
World stars of the pool already confirmed to
compete in the Games include Pieter van den Hoogenband, Inge
de Bruijn, Stev Theloke, Lars Frolander, Yana Klochkova, Martina
Moravcova and Beatrice Caslaru.
USA Swimming is set to announce its team late
next week.
2001 Goodwill Games Chief Executive Campbell
Rose was pleased with the strength of the Australian team
announced yesterday.
``Australian swimmers are rewriting the record
books and putting in a phenomenal effort by competing in the
Goodwill Games, particularly on the back of a busy schedule
including the recent World Championships in Japan and the
National Short Course Championships in Perth,'' Mr Rose said.
``It is a testament to the depth of talent in
Australian swimming that we have such a strong group of athletes
competing after such a gruelling competition schedule.
``Our swimmers will be tested in different waters
at the Goodwill Games, with our unique dual team format. After
the recent team rivalry in Japan, the Goodwill Games will
certainly allow the teams to prove once and for all who reigns
supreme in the pool.''
The Goodwill Games swim meet is run according
to the American college team format, which sees the four teams
swim against each other in a round robin format.
The competition is made even more exciting with
team coaches permitted to make changes to their entries up
to 10 minutes before the race starts.
This means just four swimmers, or two from each team, will
be in the pool at any one team. Points will be accrued according
to placement in the six preliminary sessions, with teams advancing
to gold or bronze medal swim-offs on Monday, September 3.
The team prize money for the event is $200,000
(USD) for each men and women's team event.
This includes:
- $100,000 (USD) for each first placed team
- $50,000 (USD) for the second placed team
- $30,000 (USD) for the third placed team
- $20,000 (USD) for the fourth placed team
The remaining $108,000 (USD) of the prize purse
will be divided between the 36 individual or relay event winners,
with $3,000 (USD) going to the athlete or relay team with
the fastest time per event by the end of the round robin competition.
A world record set at the Games will see a bonus
prize of $50,000 (USD) awarded.
Any second, third, fourth and fifth all-time
world bests will garner bonuses of $5,000 (USD), $4,000 (USD),
$3,000 (USD) and $2,000 (USD) respectively.
A national record will attract a $2,000 (USD)
bonus, with a $1,000 (USD) bonus for a Goodwill Games record.
The 38 events to be contested at the Goodwill
Games are:
- 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m freestyle
- 50m, 100m, 200m backstroke
- 50m, 100m, 200m breastroke
- 50m, 100m, 200m butterfly
- 200m, 400m individual medley
- 4x100m freestyle relay
- 4 x 100m medley relay
- 800m women's freestyle
- 1500m men's freestyle
Each team is allowed two entries in individual
events and one entry in relay events.
The only exception to this rule is in the 800m women and 1500m
men's event, where all eight swimmers will compete at the
same time.
While tickets to the men's sessions have all
booked out, seats still remain for all women's sessions. Phone
