Mens and Womens Competition
All Days - $38
The 1998 Goodwill Games will feature a unique team format between eight
of the worlds top teams. Womens teams include: USA, China, Germany and
a World All-Star team; mens teams competing are USA, Russia, Germany
and a World All-Star team. Teams will compete head-to-head in a round-robin dual
meet format (50-meter course) consisting of 14 events. Each team will compete and be
scored in three dual meets.
The worlds best female swimmers, including Olympic and world
champions Jenny Thompson and Amy Van Dyken, will compete against top international talent.
In the mens competition, the 50m freestyle will feature three of the worlds
fastest swimmers: Aleksandr Popov, Gary Hall, Jr. and Bill Pilczuk.
FORMAT: Team Championship Format
- Three mens national teams and one world all-star team
- Three womens national teams and one world all-star team
- Each men and womens team competes in a round-robin, dual meet format for a total
of three dual meets per team
- Team accumulates points based upon placement of its entries
- Final team placement (1-4) is determined by the team results after the first three dual
meets
- Individual event medals awarded based upon the overall fastest times during the three
round-robin dual meets in each event

HIGHLIGHTS OF SWIMMING AT THE GOODWILL GAMES
- 1994: The USA's Melvin Stewart won a gold medal in the 200m butterfly,
making it his third consecutive Goodwill Games gold medal.
- 1990: Three men broke the world record in the same 200m breaststroke
race. The USA's Mike Barrowman got the record and the gold medal while the USA's Kirk
Stackle and Spain's Sergio Lopez tied for second. Also, Surinam's Anthony Nesty defeated
the USA's Matt Biondi in the 100m butterfly race.
- 1986: The Soviet Union's Vladimir Salnikov set a world record in the
800m freestyle
