Defending Olympic and world water polo champion Spain will seek another international title when it faces three of the world’s most dominant teams-USA, Russia and Italy-at this summer’s Goodwill Games. Water polo, scheduled for July 20-22, will take place at the brand new Nassau County Goodwill Games Swimming and Diving Center.

FORMAT:

  • Each team plays each other in a round-robin preliminary (three matches each)
  • Top two teams from round-robin compete for the gold medal
  • Third and fourth place teams from round-robin compete for the bronze medal

  • 1994: Russia defeated Germany to win the gold medal, while Italy defeated Spain to win the bronze.
  • 1990: Yugoslavia captured the gold medal in the final round against the Soviet Union. Hungary defeated Spain to win the bronze.
  • 1986: The Soviet Union defeated the United States in the gold medal game.
