Former Olympians Cover TBS Superstation’s Goodwill Games Aquatics Events

Former Olympians John Naber, Rowdy Gaines, Cynthia Potter, Tracie Ruiz-Conforto and Terry Schroeder head Turner Sports’ Aquatics lineup for TBS Superstation’s coverage of the 1998 Goodwill Games, it was announced today by Coordinating Producer Bob Lanning. TBS’ 11-day coverage of Aquatics begins Monday, July 20, and continues Friday, July 24 through Sunday, Aug. 2, 8:05 – 11:05 p.m. (ET) each night.

John Naber, winner of five medals at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, will make his third appearance on TBS’ Goodwill Games coverage, serving as Aquatics host. A 1984 USOC Hall of Fame inductee, he also served as TNT’s on-site host at the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics, and as a reporter for the 1998 Winter Olympics.

Rowdy Gaines will serve as Swimming analyst for the Games. A winner of three gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Gaines has worked in a similar capacity for CBS, NBC and ESPN. He was also part of NBC’s coverage of the 1992 and 1996 Olympics.

Cynthia Potter, a 28-time National Champion, was a member of four Olympic teams and won a bronze medal in the 1976 Olympics. She covered the 1990 and 1994 Goodwill Games for Turner Sports, and will handle Diving analysis this summer. Potter, World Diver of the Year in 1970, 1971 and 1977, has worked for NBC, ABC, CBS and ESPN.

Tracie Ruiz-Conforto returns to Turner Sports as Synchronized Swimming analyst, a position she held at the 1990 Goodwill Games. She captured gold medals in both solo and duet competition in the 1984 Olympics, the year synchronized swimming debuted as an Olympic sport, and a silver medal in solo competition at the 1988 Olympics. The world’s best in her sport from 1981-1984, she won 41 gold medals in solo and duet competition.

Dr. Terry Schroeder, the top water polo player in the world in 1981 and 1985, won silver medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics. He joins TBS’ announcer lineup as a Water Polo analyst for the second time, having served in the same role at the 1990 Goodwill Games. He is currently a practicing chiropractor and head water polo coach at Pepperdine University.

TBS, the Goodwill games host broadcaster since 1986, will televise 45 hours of cable exclusive prime-time Goodwill Games competition coverage from 8:05 – 11:05 p.m. (ET), July 19 – August 2, with an additional two hours of Opening Celebration coverage, Saturday, July 18, from 8:05 – 10:05 p.m. (ET).
