McGillivray Chosen as Triathlon Competition Manager for the 1998 Goodwill Games

Dave McGillivray, Technical Director for the Boston Marathon, has been chosen as the Triathlon competition manager for the 1998 Goodwill Games, scheduled July 19-August 2, 1998 in New York City. The triathlon competition will be held on New York City streets and in Central Park on July 25.

Owner of DMSE, Inc., McGillivray has produced more than 500 mass- participatory athletic events in the past 17 years. In addition, he has organized more than 150 triathlons since 1982, conceivably more than any other race director in the United States. He has directed or assisted in the management of the Boston Marathon from 1988 to 1997, the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, the 1996 Olympic Games road events and the 1990 ITU Triathlon World Championships.

"Dave brings the experience and expertise needed to produce a world- class triathlon event," said David Raith, vice president of sports for the 1998 Goodwill Games. "The Goodwill Games wants to ensure the best quality, and we believe Dave will be able to deliver the highest standard."

A native of Medford, MA, McGillivray is perhaps best known for his historic run across America for the Jimmy Fund and for raising over $1 million for local charities. He has also give more than 1,100 motivational speaking presentations throughout the United States and the world.

Dave just recently returned from Bermuda, where he directed the ITU Triathlon World Cup - Bermuda. On Sunday September 28th, he served as the Technical Director of the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, which takes place on the historic Boston Marathon course and which annually raises millions of dollars for the Jimmy Fund.

The 15 sports are: athletics, basketball, boxing, cycling, diving, figure skating, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer, swimming, synchronized swimming, triathlon, volleyball (beach), water polo and wrestling.

All of the Games' venues are in Manhattan and on Long Island and include such well-known sports facilities as Madison Square Garden and Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, as well as more innovative ones such as Central Park and the U.S.S. Intrepid. A new $24 million aquatics facility is currently under construction, and the track stadium is part of a $22.6 million renovation of Mitchel Athletic Complex; both are located on Long Island.

Confirmed athletes include the USA's Michael Johnson, a Goodwill Games alumnus who is a three-time Olympic champion; Jackie Joyner-Kersee, three- time Olympic and Goodwill Games gold medalist and Olympic and world record holder; and Dan O'Brien, the world-record holder and 1996 Olympic decathlon gold medalist.

TBS Superstation, the Games' host network, will televise 45 hours of prime-time coverage of the 1998 Goodwill Games. CBS will televise 10 hours of weekend, afternoon coverage. In addition to appearing on TBS and CBS, boxing will be televised on HBO as part of the HBO After Dark series. The 1998 Games are the first time a sporting event has appeared on all three levels of television distribution.

Turner Sports is the host broadcaster and is coordinating all aspects of the production. Internationally, the syndication rights are being sold by Warner Bros. International Television Distribution and the Games are expected to be broadcast to more than 130 countries.

The 1998 Goodwill Games have re-defined "goodwill." Since the Games were inaugurated 11 years ago, the world's situation has changed dramatically, overcoming the forces that initially led R.E. Turner, vice chairman of Time Warner and founder of the Games, to conceptualize and host the Goodwill Games. Therefore, the Games have a new mission, benefiting children. To achieve its mission, the Goodwill Games are working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and UNICEF International.

Past Goodwill Games sites include Moscow, Soviet Union, 1986; Seattle, Wash., 1990; and St. Petersburg, Russia, 1994.

The Goodwill Games are hosted through a combined effort between Goodwill Games, Inc. and the participating sports federations, in conjunction with the appropriate state, city and county governmental agencies. Goodwill Games, Inc., a division of Turner Sports, is responsible for all aspects of the event.
