Track Cycling Open Practices at Wagner College

Practice times for cyclists on the six teams in the Goodwill Games track cycling competition are scheduled for Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24, at Wagner College on Staten Island.    The practices are open to the media.  Media should check in at the Cycling Media Sub-Center upon arrival at the venue.

NOTES ON THE GOODWILL GAMES CYCLING COMPETITION

WHEN: 3- 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, July 25 & 26

WHERE: Wagner College, Staten Island

Cyclists will compete on the VandedromeT, the world's first patented, portable, expandable, world-class velodrome.  The VandedromeT is a 170-meter wooden track that features 53-degree banks and is the creation of former Olympic cyclist John Vande Velde.  Goodwill Games cyclists can reach speeds up top 40 miles per hour.

COMPETITION: Six teams of eight cyclists (five men and three women per team) will compete in 11 races each day.  Teams score points in each race, and at the end of the second day, winners are determined by points totals.

EVENTS INCLUDE:

  • Kierin (10 laps, with first six paced by a motorcycle and the final four
    laps a sprint)
  • Chariot race (5 laps)
  • Elimination (starts with 18 in men's race and 12 in women's race; every
    third lap, the last cyclist is eliminated; when three cyclists remain, a
    sprint to the finish)
  • 30 or 50-lap scratch (30-lap race for women, 50-lap race for men)
  • Sprint (four-lap race)
  • Magic mile (three cyclists from each team for a total of 18 cyclists in 10-lap race; coach determines strategy and what combination of sprint and endurance cyclists to use)
