Venues: Mount Van Hoevenberg

Mt. Van Hoevenberg is located nine miles from the Village of Lake Placid and will host the bobsled, luge and skeleton events at the Winter Goodwill Games. The 2000 Winter Goodwill Games will represent the first event ever at the state-of-the-art track currently under construction at the venue. The new track is the third generation in a long history of bobsled and luge at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.

In addition to the track, Mt. Van Hoevenberg has a multi-purpose facility that also includes 50-kilometers of cross-country skiing, mountain biking trails and a world class biathlon range.

Venue Facts

Bobsled and Luge runs: The state-of-the-art bobsled and luge track being constructed at Mt. Van Hoevenberg is expected to be complete in December 1999. The 20 curves designed into the track are sure to present a formidable challenge for bobsled, luge and skeleton drivers competing in the Winter Goodwill Games. The track is more than 1600-meters long and has a vertical drop of more than 418 feet. Project updates are available at http://www.orda.org/bobsled.shtml.

Cross Country/ Biathlon: The venue includes the 50-kilometer (31 mile) cross-country skiing network and the Olympic Biathlon target range. The biathlon range is equipped with a state-of-the-art target system most recently used for World Cup Biathlon this past February in Lake Placid. The targets were purchases from the Nagano Olympic Committee. The trails wander through the forest and are groomed for classical and freestyle skating techniques. The trails are used for public skiing, competitive training, and are the site of national and international competitions. Rentals, ski school and a cafeteria are all available on the premises.

Mountain Biking: Mount Van Hoevenberg offer 7-miles of moderate trails and 25 miles of more difficult trails that include three slalom courses and numerous jumps. Helmet and bike rentals are available at the venue.
