Description
The Goodwill Games are the most prestigious international multi-sport invitational in the world, where athletes come together to put their greatness to the test.

Competitors
The Goodwill Games invite only the best of the best. Athletes are invited based on rankings and performances in major international competitions including Olympic Games and World Championships.

Prize Money
In both the winter and summer formats, competitors battle for their share of a substantial prize and performance purse.

Format
In principle a finals-only format, with no preliminary or qualifying heats. Some events feature elimination rounds and group play, culminating in gold-medal finals.

Mission
The Goodwill Games provide a global platform to demonstrate the importance of sport, while making strides to better the human condition. Whether making a statement against the Cold War, or helping children around the world, the Goodwill Games stand as a model and an aspiration for every young, dedicated athlete.

Organizers
Goodwill Games, Inc. is responsible for overseeing all aspects of staging future Goodwill Games. The Games secure local partners when planning Goodwill Games events around the world.

Television Coverage
TNT is the host broadcaster of the event.

There have been four Goodwill Games and one Winter Goodwill Games:

What's Next
The 2001 Games in Brisbane represent the first time that the Goodwill Games will be held outside the United States or Russia. The competition calendar features 14 sports events over 12 days, including: athletics (track and field), basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, cycling (track), diving, figure skating, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, surf lifesaving, swimming, trampoline, triathlon and weightlifting. Competitors will by vying for their share of a significant prize purse. Seven of the 10 venues needed to host the 2001 Games are within 15 kilometers of downtown Brisbane. The Goodwill Games will work with a local organizing committee to prepare for the Brisbane Games.
